ZF472 - Le Comte de Malartic 2020 Pessac Leognan Blanc

Special Price : $195/bottle

Region/Classification: France / Bordeaux / Pessac-Léognan

Grape Varieties: 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Sémillon

Alcohol Content: 12%

Volume: 750ml

Distinctive Feature: In Bordeaux, only ten estates produce white wines eligible for classification as Crus Classés de Graves. Just six estates achieve this distinction for both red and white wines, with Château Malartic-Lagravière being one of them. This underscores the estate's exceptional quality and highly regarded reputation. Furthermore, the estate maintains a limited production, yielding merely 2,000 cases of white wine annually. The second wine receives identical winemaking treatment to the first growth, yet offers greater affordability and exceptional value for money!

Profile: This wine masterfully blends herbal fruit notes with wood-aged spice. Its fresh palate reveals green fruit and apricot flavours, complemented by a creamy texture. Aged for 12 months on lees (20% in new French oak barrels), it delivers a silky-smooth mouthfeel.

ZF472A - Le Comte de Malartic Pessac Leognan Blanc

Special Price : $195/bottle

Region / Classification: Pessac-Léognan

Grape Varieties: 87% Sauvignon Blanc, 13% Sémillon

Alcohol Content: 13%

Volume: 750ml

Constructed in the 18th century under the name Domaine de Lagraviere, the estate was acquired by the Malartic family towards the end of that century. Among its members was a French naval admiral who distinguished himself during the War between France and Great Britain, particularly in the battles of 1756. In 1850, Madame Arnaud Ricard purchased the estate. To honour Admiral Malartic and his family, she incorporated the name Malartic into the estate's designation. Thus, Château Malartic-Lagraviere replaced the original name and has been used ever since. The wine label features an image of a sailing warship.

Until 1990, Malartic Estate remained under the stewardship of the Ricard family. In 1901, the estate passed to Angèle Ricard, subsequently to her granddaughter Simone, who later married the estate's manager, Jacques Marly. Jacques Marly managed Malartic from 1947 until 1990, being the last member of the Ricard family to run the estate. In 1990, Malartic was sold to the Perrier family. For seven years after acquiring the estate, the Perriers made few alterations. By late 1996, the estate changed hands once more, this time to Belgian couple Alfred-Alexandre Bonnie and Michele Bonnie. With the Bonnie family's arrival, the estate underwent substantial renewal thanks to ample funding. Vineyard acreage doubled, and all winemaking equipment was replaced with modern installations. The estate currently employs the distinguished winemaking consultants Eric Boissenot and Athanase Fakorellis.

Malartic vineyard possesses soil that is highly representative of the region. Derived from the Quaternary glacial period, it features deep gravel layers overlying a limestone subsoil containing ancient shells and marine fossils, alongside a small proportion of clay. The estate encompasses 53 hectares of vineyards. Like other Graves estates, a small 7-hectare parcel is dedicated to white grape varieties, with the remainder planted to reds. The white blend comprises 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon. The red blend consists of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and 8% Cabernet Franc.

In winemaking, the estate adheres to entirely manual processes. Grapes are hand-picked and fermented in large vats. The new owners, the Bonnie family, have undertaken a fresh round of investment and expansion. Designed by Bernard Mazieres, this includes a new fermentation room and cellar housing 20 stainless steel fermentation tanks and 10 oak fermentation vats, with all fermentation processes subject to strict temperature control. Following alcoholic fermentation and blending, the red wines undergo ageing in oak barrels, utilising 50-70% new barrels annually. The oak maturation period lasts 22 months. For the white wines, 40-60% new barrels are employed each year, with an oak ageing period of 15 months. Before bottling, egg whites are used for fining.

Like some other Graves estates, Château Malartic's white wines have consistently garnered higher acclaim than its reds. Both the first growth and second growth produce corresponding white wines, with both red and white offerings demonstrating exceptional quality. The estate also produces Le Rosé de Malartic, primarily a blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc. It should be noted that since 2007, the estate has changed the name of its second wine from Le Sillage de Malartic to La Réserve de Malartic.
