History

Chateau Batailley is one of the oldest wineries in the village of Pauillac. It has been recorded on the map. It is said that the name of the winery comes from the Hundred Years War. The first owner of the winery was the Saint-Martin family. Later, the heirs of the family sold the winery to Jean Guillaume Pecholier in 1791 because they had no intention of managing the winery. In 1816, Jean Guillaume Pecholier died, the winery was auctioned, and Daniel Guestier acquired part of the property rights of the winery. After that, he successively obtained most of the property rights of the winery, and continued to purchase surrounding vineyards to expand the planting area, introduce better winemaking equipment and technology, and carry out large-scale investment and innovation in the winery. When Daniel Guestier passed away in 1847, Chateau Batailley was already well-known in the Bordeaux area, and was rated as a 5th growth winery in 1855.

Terroir

The existing vineyard area of Batley Winery is 57 hectares, which are divided into four major gardens, which are subdivided into 60 plots below, and the soil types are mainly gravel and silica. Four red grape varieties are planted in the vineyard according to local conditions, which are 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Montana. For Petit Verdot, the average age of the vines is 40 years and the planting density is 8,000 vines per hectare.

Wine making

The winery uses 60 temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for fermentation, corresponding to 60 plots respectively, realizing the separate fermentation of a single plot and providing more choices for the final wine blending. Alcoholic fermentation is followed by Malolactic-Fermentation. Typically, the fermented wine is aged for 16 to 18 months in 55% new French oak barrels. the
