Cortese is a native Italian variety with a long history dating back to the 17th century. Piemonte has been cultivated for hundreds of years in Italy. It is the main grape variety of Gavi. The yield can be very high. In order to maintain the quality and flavor of Cortese, winemakers will choose to prune the vines to control the yield.

Major Region - Gavi DOCG

Gavi DOCG (also marked as Cortese di Gavi DOCG) is located in the province of Allesandria in the southeastern part of Piemonte, Italy. The planting area covers 11 towns including Gavi (including Bosio, Capriata d’Orba, and Carrosio). The production area was rated as a DOC production area in 1974, and was promoted to the highest level of DOCG production area in 1998. Liquor in the production area must be made with 100% Cortese. Gavi is a relatively warm climate in Piemonte, which can make Cortese mature slowly. However, in colder years, Cortese may not be fully ripe, resulting in wines that are too acidic. For this reason, some winemakers use malolactic fermentation to reduce acidity and increase complexity.

White wines in Gavi have high acidity, fresh fruit and white flowers. In addition to white wine, there are also Cortese sparkling wine, Spumate sparkling wine and Riserva Spumate Metodo Classico. Among them is the Riserva Spumate Metodo Classico. It is stipulated that it must be brewed by the traditional method, with an alcohol content of at least 11 degrees, and at least 2 years of aging, of which at least 18 months of aging on lees (On lees).

Other Regions

In addition to Piemonte's Gavi, in Veneto, Cortese is blended with two other white grapes, Trebbiano and Garganega, to produce Bianco di Custoza. Oltrepò Pavese DOC is also grown in small quantities in the Lombardy region.

Flavor and Food Pairing

High acidity and floral aromas with hints of herbs, pear, lime, apple, peach, honeydew melon. Light bodied and quite refreshing. White wines made from Cortese have high acidity and are best paired with seafood.
