Emilia Romagna

Northern Italy

Emilia-Romagna is a fertile and fertile region in northern Italy and the birthplace of top Italian products and brands. Start with cheese and Parma ham and finish with Ferrari and Lamborghini. The region offers a sensory fusion of natural and cultural wonders: wondrous Renaissance monuments, UNESCO heritage sites, seaside seashores, national parks and, of course, superstar cuisine with its vibrant wines. It is one of the most prolific wine regions in the country and home to carbonated red wines from the Lambrusco grape variety.

Lambrusco

The Emilia-Romagna wine region has 58,000 hectares of vineyards, almost half of which are on the plains. Less than 5 million hectoliters of wine are produced. One of the region's most famous grape varieties is Lambrusco, a predominantly sweet and sparkling wine grown near Modena.

Two-thirds are in large tracts of alluvial soil, but the best areas are on the hills on the southern border at the foot of the Apennines. The Emilia region is mainly known for Frizzante and spumante, pearl or sparkling red and rosé wines from different Lambrusco varieties, produced mainly as tasty and popular wines for young drinking.

Lambrusco is Emilia-Romagna's most famous wine. The name Lambrusco covers red sparkling wine as well as about 60 grape varieties from which the wine is made.

Other Grape Varieties

The Emilia-Romagna wine region has also had success producing red wines from the Sangiovese grape variety. Sangiovese is the most widespread grape variety in Italy, producing wonderful wines such as Montalcino Brunello, Chianti and Montepulciano. In the Emilia-Romagna wine region, the red wines of Sangiovese express the style of Sangiovese di Romagna DOC with their reddish purple color, berry aromas and silky tannins.

Among red wines, you can also find Barbera, which makes for a seductive and pure red wine.

Along with Sangiovese and Lambrusco, Pinot Noir plays an important role among the red grape varieties in Emilia-Romagna. Meanwhile, international varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are also included in the grower's portfolio.

Albana is a good choice for white wines from the Emilia Romagna region, and it was also the first white wine in Italy to receive DOCG certification in 1987. It comes from Romagna in the southeast of the region.

Appellation

In fact, Emilia-Romagna is so large that it is divided into 4 separate regions when it comes to its wines, each with unique climatic and geographical differences and thus producing very different wines. of wine. About 85% of Emilia-Romagna's production is early-drinking, entry-level wines from nine IGT-rated appellations, but another 15% comes from many higher-quality appellations.

Emilia-Romagna has only 2 highest DOCG quality classifications (Albana di Romagna and Colli Bolognesi Pignoletto), but has as many as 18 DOC quality production appellations!

include:

Colli Piacentini DOC, Gutturnio DOC, Ortrugo, Colli Bolognesi DOC, Romagna DOC, Bosco Eliceo DOC, Colli d'Imola DOC, Colli di Faenza DOC, Colli di Rimini DOC, Albana di Romagna DOCG, etc. The most famous wines produced are the five Lambrusco DOCs: Salamino di Santa Croce, di Sorbara, Grasparossa di Castelvetra, Modena and Reggiano.
