Ribeira Sacra

North-western Spain region

Ribeira Sacra DO (Denominacion de Origen) is a wine-growing region located in the center of Galicia in northwestern Spain. Its borders are roughly marked by the Mino and Syr Darya rivers, both of which flow from the Cantabrian Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. Winemaking in the region dates back to Roman times and was continued by monks in the Middle Ages. The name Ribeira Sacra means "Holy Coast" and most likely refers to the numerous monasteries in the area. The area received official Denominación de Origen status in 1996.

Geography

"Heroic viticulture"

Ribeira Sacra has a planting area of 1,276 hectares and 89 wineries. Ribeira Sacra is one of the five Denominaciones de Origen in Galicia (the others are Rías Baixas, Ribeiro, Valdeorras and Monterrei). It is divided into five different subdivisions: Amandi, Chantada, Quiroga-Bibei, Ribeiras do Miño y Ribeiras do Sil.

The slope here can reach 85%, making vineyard work very strenuous, or what the locals call "heroic viticulture".

Terroir

Here steep slopes and ravines are dominated by beautiful shore terrace vineyards. Here, slopes can reach 85%, making vineyard work very hard, as is well known locally.

Ribeira Sacra is far less affected by the Atlantic Ocean than its eastern neighbor Rias Baixas. The climate in the Sil river valley is more continental, with long, warm summers and cold, wet winters. The humidity here is also much lower than in Rías Baixas, and the river plays a role in regulating the temperature. The steep vineyards ensure good drainage of the slate and granite soils, and the terraces are carefully positioned to maximize sunlight hours. All these factors allow the vines to produce grapes with intense flavors that express the local terroir.
