Showing spectacularly well and a brilliant vintage for this cuvée, the 2009 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin is a textbook Grenache that has an almost cool climate feel in its fresh, delineated aromas of black cherry, raspberry, licorice, mineral, and freshly snipped flowers. While a small portion of the blend is aged in new demi-muids (30% and in ¼ new barrique), you would not know it by tasting it as the wine presents a beautifully pure, classic profile on both the nose and palate. Full-bodied and concentrated, yet still remarkably fresh and detailed, with not even a hint of being over the top, this spectacular Chaupin should be given another 4-5 years in the cellar (no harm in drinking now however), at which point it will evolve gracefully for 15-20+ years.

In just a beautiful spot right now, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin offers up scents of purple raspberries and hints of Mexican chocolate. Full-bodied and silky-textured, it's at the peak of its maturity, with at least 5-6 years left ahead of it.

Mouthfilling from the start, with loads of plum sauce, linzer and crushed cherry flavors backed by mouthwatering licorice and roasted spice notes. There's plenty of grip on the finish, with plum skin, pepper, pastis and graphite all chiming in.

Tasted no fewer than three times (rated 99 once and 98 two other times) and up there with, and probably eclipsing, the ‘07, the 2010 Cuvée Chaupin is a spectacular blend of 100% Grenache that is from a cooler terroir in the northwest part of the appellation. Seeming like the essence of Grenache, it offers up an extraordinary perfume of black raspberry, spring flowers, licorice, and roasted meat-like qualities on the nose. This is followed by a full-bodied, dense, and thrillingly concentrated wine that has fresh acids, a seamless, surprisingly light and elegant texture, and masses of tannin that emerge on the finish. While there is enough texture to keep it interesting now, it really needs 4-5 years of bottle age, and will drink well for 2-3 decades.

The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin rivals the 2007 Chaupin (to date the best Chaupin I have yet tasted). Made from 100% Grenache (3/4 destemmed), it boasts a dense black/purple color as well as unbelievable notes of raspberries, black cherries, licorice, truffles, camphor, forest floor and garrigue. This wine is stunningly concentrated, incredibly noble, precise and expansive on the palate with mouth-saturating intensity, glycerin and extract. It is an amazing example of impeccably grown old vine Grenache translated into a natural yet full-throttle red. Domaine de la Janasse is one of the great winemaking estates of not only France, but of the world ... The consistency at this estate since the mid-1990s has been remarkable. Year in and year out, the wines, both reds and whites, are among the finest one will find...anywhere!

Densely textured and sappy in feel, with bright, engaging fruit and red and black currant, raspberry and blackberry notes all coursing along, pushed by a graphite spine and backed by a fruitcake- and roasted apple wood-filled finish. Still tight, this will need some cellaring.

The nose of the 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin is quite evolved, as evidenced by prominent dried red fruits, loamy earth, melted licorice and a flicker of white mushrooms. But the palate isn't ready for action just yet. Full- bodied, concentrated and packed with ripe tannins.
