Chateau Brane-Cantenac is located in the Margaux region, adjacent to the third-level winery Chateau Cantenac Brown. It is ranked second-level village in the 1855 classification. The history of the winery can be traced back to 250 years ago. The winery was formerly known as Hostein, and was renamed Baron de Brane after being acquired by the Gorce family. At that time, the winery already had the reputation of "Napoleon in the wine world", and later changed its name to Chateau Brane-Cantenac again in 1838. In 1920, the estate was acquired by La Société des Grands Crus de France, a top French wine merchant. At that time, the wine merchant also owned several famous chateaus, including Chateau Margaux, Chateau Giscours and Chateau Lagrange.
In 1925 Francois Lurton and Leonce Recapet became the owners of the winery. Lucien Lurton inherited the estate in 1956 and acquired several estates in the Bordeaux region, including Durfort-Vivens (second-level estate), Chateau Desmirail (third-level estate) and Haut- Bages Libéral (fifth growth), Camesac chateau de camensac (fifth growth), etc., have made the Lurton family quite famous in Bordeaux. Later, Lucien divided the winery among several children. Among them, the eldest son Henri Lurton inherited Brane-Cantenac. Henri holds a master's degree in biology, and also holds a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) in Enology and Viticulture from the University of Erdo. He is constantly striving to improve the quality of wine and highlight the local terroir.
The winery covers an area of 75 hectares and has quite superior terroir conditions in the Margaux region. Planted with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4.5% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Carmenere. The soil is rich in mineral gravel and clay. The gravel can effectively retain heat and reflect sunlight, making the grapes more ripe and the flavor more intense. Clay can provide sufficient moisture to the vines in a dry environment, avoid vine wilting/grape yields, and increase grape tannins and acidity.
The grapes in the winery are all hand-harvested, and will be brewed separately according to the grapes harvested in each vineyard plot. The winery uses various methods (including: cold maceration, cap pressing, and skin pouring) to ensure that the grape skins are in full contact with the grape juice to be fermented, so as to extract more flavors and natural pigments. Later, malolactic fermentation is used to soften the tannins and make the wine fuller. The flagship old model will use 70% new oak barrels and age for an average of 18 months to add flavor.
The winery has launched 3 types of red wine, namely: Chateau -Cantenac (original brand), Baron De Brane (secondary brand) and Margaux De Brane (basic model). The best years were 1989, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008. With its outstanding quality, the winery was named "Pauillac of Margaux" by Robert Parker. In addition to red wine, Brane-Cantenac will launch Bordeaux AOC-level white wine-Chateau Brane Cantenac Blanc in 2020, brewed with 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon, and aged in oak barrels for 8 months.
