Chassagne Montrachet

Chassagne-Montrachet is located in the south of Burgundy Puligny-Montrachet, and together with Meursault in the north, it is also known as Burgundy's most famous star liquor production area. However, the southern section of Chassagne-Montrachet has rocky soil, which is suitable for growing the red grape Pinot Noir. The red wine production in the area currently accounts for one-third of the total production, and the price of red wine is relatively cheap.

Vineyard

The area of Chassagne-Montrachet is much larger than that of neighboring production areas, up to 350 hectares, of which 180 hectares are village level, 159 hectares are first-class vineyards and 11.4 hectares are grand cru. There are three Grand Cru vineyards, including Montrachet, Batard-Montrachet and Criots-Batard-Montrachet, all located at the northern end of Puligny-Montrachet, close to Puligny-Montrachet (the first two Grand Cru gardens directly share it).

Criots-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Criots-Batard-Montrachet is the only Grand Cru vineyard that belongs exclusively to Chassagne-Montrachet. Apart from the southernmost Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy, it is also one of the smallest AOC/AOP in Cote de Beaune, covering an area of only 1.6 hectares. The Chardonnay white wine produced is complex and rich, and is considered one of the top white wine producing areas in the world.

Chassagne-Montrachet Wine Characteristics

The Burgundy Wine Association points out that Chassagne-Montrachet white wine has a fresh butter flavor, as well as ripe pears, pineapples and other tropical fruits, full of minerality and soft body structure. It is often rounder than the Puligny-Montrachet mentioned above, and the aroma is softer than Merusault.

Red wines usually have the aroma of cherries, wild strawberries, currants and raspberries, with a slight spice flavor and texture. Although relatively simple when young, as it matures, its structure becomes concentrated and full of flavor, and its complexity is fascinating.

Famous Winery in Chassagne-Montrachet

Bruno Colin (from Colin-Deleger) comes from the famous Colin family in the Beaune area. He has introduced many new methods and concepts. His products focus on the balance of fruit flavors; the white wine focuses on retaining the original light floral and fruity aroma.

Pierre-Yves-Colin-Morey (commonly known as PYCM): The wine merchant (and winery) after the son of Marc Colin's family married the daughter of Jean-Marc Morey's family. The liquor it produces is as famous as Domaine Leflaive, a traditional winery. Red wine has a gorgeous, charming floral aroma.

Vincent Dancer: Established in 1996, insists on outstanding quality and extremely low output. Its products have been highly praised by British wine critic Jasper Morris MW as being elegant, pure and full of vitality. It is currently taken over by Vincent Dancer's son Theo Dancer.
