Nuits-Saint-Georges is one of the most famous wine regions in Burgundy and the largest city in the Côtes de Nuits. Located at the southern end of the Côte de Nuits, it is known for producing high-quality red wines. The wines of the region are widely praised for their strong structure, aging potential and elegant flavors. Nuits-Saint-Georges is not only a favorite of wine lovers, but also an important symbol of Burgundy's winemaking history. Two parts, bounded by the village itself, the northern part extends to the border of Vosne-Romanée, and the southern part of the area is located in Nuits-Saint-Georges, and part of it crosses to the vineyards of neighboring Premeaux and Prissey.
Nuits-Saint-Georges red wines typically have aromas of black cherry, raspberry and black currant, with notes of forest floor, spices and a hint of smoke. The palate is structured and has the potential to age for a long time. Over time, the fruity aromas transform into complex flavors such as dried fruit, spices, leather and earth.
Nuits-Saint-Georges vineyards include Village, Premier Cru and a small amount of Grand Cru (although technically Nuits-Saint-Georges does not have its own Grand Cru, some vineyards near Vosne-Romanee are very close to Grand Cru quality). There are 38 Premier Crus in the 322 hectares of vineyards.
Nuits-Saint-Georges has more than 40 Premier Cru vineyards, the most famous of which include:
1er Cru Les Damodes
Located in the north of the region, close to Vosne-Romanee, it is one of the most famous first-class vineyards in the area. It is only 120 meters away from La Romanée Grand Cru and is at the same latitude as Les Richebourgs Grand Cru. The taste of the wine from this vineyard is more similar to the style of Vosne-Romanée, and is quite different from the wine of Nuits-Saint-Georges.
1er Cru Aux Boudots
It is closely adjacent to the famous first-class vineyard Les Malconsorts in Vosne-Romanée village. The slope is steep and the soil is stony. It is composed of gravel, crushed limestone, marl and a small amount of clay. It has good drainage, full-bodied, delicate and elegant, solid structure, and has a unique style that combines the characteristics of the two villages.
1er Cru Les Cailles
Les Cailles, known as the "super first-class garden", is located at the southern end of the region, quite close to the Premeaux and Prissey production areas. It is mainly characterized by very delicate and fine textures. It is also the most elegant first-class garden in the region.
Hospices de Nuits is one of the most important charity wine auctions in Burgundy, similar in format to another well-known auction of the Hospices de Beaune. The auction is hosted by the Nuits-Saint-Georges Hospital Foundation and aims to raise funds to support the operation and equipment upgrade of local medical institutions. This annual event is not only an important event in the wine industry, but also a perfect combination of charity and wine culture.
Robert Chevillon
The elite winery of Nuits Saint Georges, founded by Robert Chevillon, is currently run by Robert's two sons Bertrand and Denis. The style is more delicate and lighter than other wineries in the same area. All grapes are destemmed and soaked before fermentation.
Hospices de Nuits
It has a total of 12.4 hectares of vineyards donated by donors, and the grapes planted are used to make 18 wines. The wines are named after the donors. The style is relatively thick and solid.
Dominique Laurent Pere & Fils
Formerly Dominique Laurent, commonly known as the barrel king. It has its own oak barrel factory. It is famous for its extremely strong oak barrel style and uses more oak barrels than other wineries in Burgundy. In 2006, Dominique Laurent and his son Jean started a new business named Domaine Laurent Pere & Fils.
