Puligny-Montrachet is known as the best white wine producing area in Burgundy and is quite well-known. Like other Burgundy production areas (Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin), Puligny-Montrachet was originally called Puligny. It was not until 1879 that the most important Grand Cru Montrachet was added as a suffix to form the current village name. Pinot Noir red wine and Chardonnay white wine can be produced in the production area, with red wine accounting for only a small part of the total production. The production area has the largest number of white wine Grand Crus (4 in total) in Burgundy, including Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Batard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet, and 17 Premier Crus. These Grand Crus almost face east and are close together. Interestingly, the two Grand Crus, Montrachet and Batard-Montrachet, are shared with another appellation, Chassagne-Montrachet.
The aroma is rich, blooming with fresh floral aroma, the taste is tense, and the minerality is sufficient. Fresh almonds and green apples can often be found. The mineral aroma is strong. The wine structure is firm and clear, and the aftertaste is hard, often with a creamy smoothness. Puligny Montrachet has a firm and firm texture with pronounced acidity and minerality.
Montrachet
The most famous white wine Grand Cru vineyard covers an area of 8 hectares, of which about 4 hectares are located in Chassagne-Montrachet. The vineyard slopes are relatively gentle. Compared with other grand cru gardens in the area, it has more lime clay and stones, and the stones can improve drainage. Liquor is known for its deep and powerful taste, with abundant fruit flavor. Usually a longer period of decanting in the bottle or decanting in the bottle is needed to release better aromas.
Chevalier-Montrachet
The terrain of the vineyard is steep, with a slope of up to 15%, so part of the area has been reclaimed into terraces. The soil contains a lot of limestone, so the liquor produced has aromas of minerals and fruits, with an elegant and delicate style. Bright and lively acidity.
Batard-Montrachet
It covers an area of 11.87 hectares, of which approximately 5.84 hectares are located in Chassagne-Montrachet. The vineyard is very flat with a slope of only 1%. The style has more tropical fruit aromas, as well as butter and bread aromas. The wine has a rounder and richer body and has excellent aging ability.
Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet
Located on the northeast side of Batard-Montrachet, facing southwest. It is worth mentioning that wines from this region can also bear the name Batard-Montrachet. The soil is slightly richer and deeper than the plot above. While it's still composed of the same limestone and marl as the more famous vines on the slopes above, there's a higher proportion of clay. Among only 3.7 hectares, the famous winery Domaine Leflavie has more than 1 hectare of vineyards here.
