Robert Mondavi is known as the legendary American winemaker. His technical and marketing strategies brought worldwide recognition to the wines of California's Napa Valley. Early on, Robert Mondavi advocated labeling wines by grape variety rather than generic name, which became the benchmark for all New World wines. In October 2008, the University of California, Davis (UCD) established the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science (RMI) in memory of Robert Mondavi, who passed away that year, in recognition of his contributions to California wine.
Robert Mondavi is the second generation of Italian immigrants. His parents, Cesare Mondavi and Rosa Grassi, immigrated to Minnesota from Sassoferrato, Italy. After Robert Mondavi was born, his family moved to Lodi, California, where his father, Cesare, established a fruit packing company under the name C. Mondavi and Sons, which mainly packaged and shipped grapes to the East Coast for family winemaking. Robert Mondavi graduated from Stanford University in 1936 with degrees in economics and business administration.
In 1943, the Mondavi family purchased the Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena, California, from James Moffitt, and he joined his father and brother Peter. In 1965, Robert Mondavi left the family winery after a dispute with his brother over the direction of the winery. Mondavi then opened his own winery in Oakville, California.
Mondavi’s original vineyard lands include the To Kalon (Greek for “beautiful”) vineyard, originally established by Napa Valley pioneer H.W. Founded in 1868 by Crabb. Mondavi selected Cliff May to design the winery building, which opened in 1966 and is now considered an architectural icon in Napa Valley.
Currently, the winery is one of the largest and most iconic wineries in California, producing 1,500,000 cases of wine annually. The winery owns two vineyards in Napa Valley with a total area of 440 hectares. Each vineyard grows different grapes according to its own terroir characteristics, with Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon accounting for the majority. The winery mainly uses traditional methods to make wine, including manual picking and aging in oak barrels. The To Kalon vineyard behind the winery has the oldest vines in Napa Valley.
