Verdejo - Spanish Refreshing White Wine

Wine Style – Spanish Sauvignon Blanc

Verdejo is considered one of Spain's best performing white grapes. It is an aromatic, herbaceous variety with thin skin and medium-sized, compact berries. Verdejo produces white wines with a rich, crisp, aromatic nose and a rich, smooth palate with lively notes of citrus, lime and grapefruit peel. It is very similar to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.

Verdejo wines are usually dry, medium-bodied, medium-alcoholic, and high in acidity. They often have aromas of flowers, fennel, lemon, peach, cantaloupe, pineapple, etc. Wines fermented in oak barrels also have aromas of vanilla and toast. After aging on the lees, they may have aromas of nuts and dough.

Major Region - Rueda DO

More than 90% of the world's Verdejo production is located in the Rueda region of Spain. In the region, Verdejo plantings account for more than 85% of the vineyard area in the region. This is a relatively hot continental climate, with hot summers, cold winters, and very long days and nights. The average annual rainfall is only 300-500 mm, and it is relatively dry. Sometimes there will be droughts in the summer, and the grapes are also at risk of being burned by strong sunlight. However, the dry climate reduces the risk of bacterial and fungal diseases, and healthy grapes can be harvested basically every year.

The law stipulates that the proportion of Verdegio in white wine produced in DO Rueda must reach at least 50%, but most white wines are made from 100% Verdegio. If it is a blended white wine, the main varieties used for blending include Sauvignon Blanc or Viura (also known as Macabeo).

Variety characteristics and planting methods

Verdejo is widely planted in Rueda DO mainly because of its good drought resistance and easy adaptation to the low rainfall environment in Rueda. Secondly, this variety is grown at a high altitude, with most vineyards located at 600-800 meters above sea level, and the vineyards have a large temperature difference between day and night. The cool nights will make the ripening slower and more stable, helping to maintain the acidity and fresh fruit flavor of the grapes.

Different planting methods also have a great impact on the growth of grapes. In the past, most of them were bush vines. The grape leaves can cover the grapes, provide a cooler microclimate for the grapes, and slow down the evaporation of soil moisture. Now more and more pergola plantings are becoming more common. Good canopy management can protect the grapes well, keeping them in a cool environment and avoiding the grapes from being burned by the strong local sunlight. In addition, drip irrigation equipment is also used to alleviate the threat of water shortage.

Food Pairing

Verdejo has a high acidity and lively personality, suitable for a variety of dishes, as an aperitif or even as a tool to cleanse the taste buds. Most wines can obtain fresh fruity and floral aromas through cold soaking before fermentation. Such wines are usually light-bodied, fresh and fruity. It is suitable for fish and chips, to dissolve the greasiness in the dishes. The herbal flavor characteristics are also suitable for dishes using asparagus, avocado, and lantern peppers, such as creamy salmon with asparagus and Mexican burritos.
