45-year-old vine Amarone at DOCG level
Luca Maroni 99 pts【Vivino 4.3
Amarone, a love affair that is both enduring and complex, is something you'll fall in love with at first sight.

WI030B - Luciano Arduini Simison Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2019
Single item price: $358/piece
3-piece special offer set: $984/set (Average price: $328/piece)

The "SIMISON" series Amarone also comes from the Luciano Arduini winery in Valpolicella, Italy. The "SIMISON" series is made from the historic vines of Luciano Arduini, with an average vine age of 45 years! Combined with exceptional soil components, it creates a unique taste, making it the most interesting wine in the entire series. "SIMISON" is a blend of grapes grown in a designated region: Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Oseleta. Oseleta is one of the rarest red grape varieties grown in the Veneto region of Italy, originating approximately 150 years ago. It was replanted in the 1980s, allowing us to once again experience the unique flavors that this historic grape brings to the wine.

The difference between "SIMISON" Amarone and the "Classico" Amarone from the Traditional series is that 45% of the water in the grapes is extracted, and then an additional 5% is air-dried! The grapes are air-dried for four months after harvesting, resulting in a more concentrated wine flavor. This method aims to effectively increase the concentration of the grapes while preserving their sugar content.

SIMISON Amarone can be described as the taste of passionate love! For ‘SIMISON’ boasts remarkably rich layers of aroma and flavour, evolving beautifully over time. This wine displays a ruby hue with an intensely fragrant bouquet. After decanting for 45 minutes, the glass releases waves of blueberry, cherry, toffee, coffee and mint aromas upon first pour. The palate initially reveals blueberry, cherry, plum and plum notes, followed by dried strawberries, raisins, vanilla, coffee, toffee, subtle sweet spices, liquorice, and oak. The fruit notes blend perfectly with the character imparted by 24 months of oak barrel ageing. Crafted from indigenous Italian grapes dried before vinification, the flavour profile is remarkably concentrated! Full-bodied with velvety tannins delivering an exceptionally smooth, balanced palate and a remarkably persistent finish! The flavour layers are profoundly complex! An ideal pairing for game, grilled meats, and cheeses.

DOCG-level Amarone

DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita): Denotes premium wines from designated appellations, representing the highest tier within Italy's wine classification system. Wines of this classification must be sold in bottles with a capacity of less than 5 litres, bearing an official code label on the cork. Furthermore, DOCG certification is awarded to the finest sub-regions within DOC-designated areas, subjecting them to stricter regulations governing production and labelling. Winemakers must adhere to specific regulations governing the designated growing region, prescribed grape variety ratios, winemaking techniques, and ageing methods to qualify for the DOCG designation.

The brewing process

Following the autumn harvest of fully ripened grapes, the fruit undergoes destemming and gentle pressing, followed by a 45-day maceration period. During this stage, manual punching down and rack and return are performed, with fermentation taking place at temperatures between 10°C and 20°C. The wine is subsequently transferred to barrels before being placed in large Slavonian oak casks. After approximately 24 months of maturation, the wine undergoes further ageing in the bottle.

Valpolicella

Valpolicella lies within Italy's northern Veneto region, northwest of Verona at the foothills of the Alps, spanning an area of 240 square miles. The appellation reaches elevations of up to 1,300 feet, characterised by soils predominantly composed of calcium-rich limestone and clay, proving highly favourable for grape cultivation. Wines are primarily crafted from four indigenous varieties: Corvina, Rondinella, Corvinone, and Molinara. Oseleta is a relative of Rondinella and Corvina Veronese.

Local appellation regulations stipulate that red wines labelled ‘Valpolicella DOC’ must contain 45%-69% Corvina. Corvinone may occasionally substitute, but must not exceed 50%. Rondinella must comprise 5% to 30% of the blend. Among these varieties, Corvinone often imparts delightful cherry notes; Rondinella contributes rich floral aromas; while Molinara, though increasingly rare in recent years, provides essential acidity support.

Luciano Arduini

Luciano Arduini possesses extensive experience in the wine industry, developed over generations. The company was founded in the 1940s when grandfather Gabriele established the business in Canal, a small town in Valpolicella Marano. In 1969, Battista inherited the Corrubbio enterprise. The current helmsman, Luciano, followed in his father Battista's innovative footsteps, emulating his father's example, inheriting his winemaking culture, and interpreting it through his own personal vision. Indeed, in 2000, Arduini achieved a significant leap forward in innovation compared to previous structures, commencing wine production at a new, modern winery. Today, Luciano works alongside his son Andrea, tending the vines and crafting the wines.

Luca Maroni.義大利最重量級的酒評專家】

Italy's most influential wine critic, Luca Maroni (LM), is a name well known to any devotee of Italian wines. Since embarking on his wine-criticism career in 1987, he has demonstrated an extraordinary palate and analytical prowess. His pioneering scoring system is grounded in the principle that wine, being entirely derived from grapes, should express the inherent fruit character (fruit-grade), while also delivering a sense of pleasure (pleasantness) upon consumption. Consequently, he evaluates wines across three dimensions: consistency, balance, and integrity. The resulting index of quality not only encompasses sensory perception but also incorporates these three dimensions, all of which can be scientifically analysed and quantified. Furthermore, Luca Maroni incorporates factors like price and production volume that influence accessibility, employing a scientific and rational approach to explain the complex sensory experience of wine. Consequently, his scoring system commands the utmost trust and admiration among Italian wine enthusiasts. His annual guide, Annuario dei Migliori Vini Italiani, provides invaluable direction for wine lovers navigating the vast sea of wines. However, precisely because Luca Maroni's scoring system is meticulously detailed and rigorous, virtually every wine reviewed is presented with stark honesty. Scores routinely exceeding 90 points, commonplace in other publications, are comparatively rare in Luca Maroni's guides. It should be noted that Luca Maroni's highest possible score is merely 99 points.
