The principal wines of Château Boyd Cantenac comprise a grand vin—Château Boyd Cantenac—three second wines—Jacques Boyd, La Croix de Boyd-Cantenac, and Josephine de Boyd—and a white wine—Alto de Cantenac Brown. The estate's flagship red featured in the acclaimed Japanese manga The Drops of God: protagonist Shizuku Kamisaki, in his quest to identify the ‘Drops of God,’ discovers numerous exceptional wines of remarkable character. Boyd Cantenac stands among these, described as a ‘masquerade ball.’ Shizuku Kamisaki described its bouquet as ‘wispy smoke and an indescribable earthiness, the fragrance of soil saturated with dew from vast courtyards.’ The estate's second wine is crafted from grapes harvested from younger vines within the vineyard. Lighter in body than the flagship wine and displaying more pronounced fruit notes, it reaches its drinking window without requiring years of ageing.
Château Boyd Cantenac is situated in the Margaux wine village within Bordeaux's Médoc region, classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification. Château Boyd Cantenac has consistently adhered to crafting elegant wines in the traditional Margaux style, earning the affection of numerous wine enthusiasts.
The estate was founded in 1754 by Jacques Boyd, a descendant of Scottish immigrants. Jacques Boyd combined his surname with the village name Cantenac to name the estate Boyd Cantenac, a name that endures to this day. In 1806, through marriage, the estate passed to John Lewis Brown. After years of stewardship, the estate achieved Third Growth status in the 1855 Classification.
In the early 20th century, Château Boyd Cantenac was acquired by the renowned Ginestet family, who already owned several estates including the celebrated Château Margaux. Subsequently, the Ginestets faced financial difficulties and sold Bécatana to sustain their operations. In 1932, Pierre Guillemet, proprietor of Château Pouget, acquired the estate. Since then, Château Beccatana has been managed by the Guillemet family, now in its fourth generation. The current owner and chief winemaker is Lucien Guillemet.
