【French Cru Bourgeois Classification System(Cru Bourgeois)】
Crus Bourgeois is a grading system jointly formulated and implemented by the French Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Agricultural Council in 1932. Because Bourgeois can be translated as "middle class", Cru Bourgeois is also translated as intermediate estate level. It is one of the historic classifications in the Médoc region on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Since it was officially recognized by the government in 2003, it has taken the form of an annual review and awarded the outstanding works among the wines participating in the selection that year.
Beginning in 2007, a new wine identification system was launched that said wines rated as Cru Bourgeois "only represent quality, not level." It will be open to all wineries in the Medoc region. As long as these wineries follow the wine production rules and meet the quality standards, they can be recognized as Cru Bourgeois. The basis of the 2007 standards: 1. Represents quality, not level; 2. Specified wine making methods and special tasting certification of wine; 3. Certification is conducted annually by an independent organization; 4. All wineries in the Medoc region Anyone can apply for certification.
In 2008, nearly 300 wineries were certified, either with at least 7 hectares of vineyards in the Haute-Médoc region or with at least 4 hectares of vineyards in one of the villages).
Most of the mid-level wineries are located outside the four major regions of Médoc (Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, and Margaux), because these four regions (especially Pauillac) are the world of classified wines. Most of them are located in the Médoc and Haut-Médoc production areas, and there are a total of 140 mid-level wineries in the Haut-Médoc, accounting for 70% of the production. There are often "hidden dragons and lurking tigers" in mid-level shops. Their high quality and reasonable price are often synonymous with great value for money.
Each bottle of the 2016 vintage will be labeled with an anti-counterfeiting code as follows: Consumers can enter the unique code for each bottle of wine through the official website of the Bourgeois Alliance (www.crus-bourgeois.com), and read the relevant information about the Bourgeois on the website page information.
From 2020, the latest classification system for Bordeaux Bourgeois will be officially implemented. This new classification will also divide the selected Cru Bourgeois into three levels from high to low: Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, Cru Bourgeois Superieur and Cru Bourgeois. In addition, the current annual selection will be changed to a graded selection every five years.
