Chateau Carbonnieux

Carbonnieux is located on a gravel hilltop in the heart of Leognan, Bordeaux, and is one of the oldest and largest wine estates in the Bordeaux region. The vineyard area exceeds one hundred hectares. The entire vineyard has been owned by the Perrin family for 4 generations. All wines produced are from the Pessac-Léognan AOP. The winery produces red wines and dry white wines, both of which are certified as Grands Crus Classés de Graves. The name of the domaine comes from the "Carbonius" or Carbonnieu family, who cultivated land in Leonan at the beginning of the 13th century. The Bordeaux archives mention the name of a certain Ramon Carbonnieu who owned vineyards in Léognan in 1234.

History

The manor originated in the Middle Ages (1292). After several twists and turns, Marc Perrin acquired the winery in the 20th century and immediately began to restore the winery and its vineyards. With the help of his son, he began a massive replanting campaign, initially expanding the vineyard to 45 hectares in 1970, then 70 hectares in 1980, and today it is close to 95 hectares. After his father's death, Anthony took over the winery, building a new winery in 1990 and modernizing the cellars to accommodate new winemaking methods. He continued to restore the chateau and vineyards, and he did not hesitate to invest in the reputation of Carbonnieux and Bordeaux wines throughout the world. He was president of the Bordeaux Federation and over the years he passed on this family tradition and expertise to his children Eric, Christine and Philibert Perrin. They are the ones who took over the torch today and led this estate to the top again.

He was president of the Bordeaux Federation and over the years he passed on this family tradition and expertise to his children Eric, Christine and Philibert Perrin. They are the ones who took over the torch today and led this estate to the top again. Following in his father's footsteps, Eric took over as President of the Graves Classification from 2012 to 2015, and Philibert has been President of the Pessac-Léognan Appellation since 2017. In 2019, the family continued to grow and Eric’s eldest son joined the work team. Marc handles the commercial part and Andréa is winemaker and cellar master.

First Label

Chateau Carbonnieux Rouge

For centuries, Carbonnieux has been a great classic among the best wines of the Bordeaux region. With its high quality standards, it uses Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot blends. Both modern and traditional red winemaking processes proceed through slow and gentle extraction to preserve the roundness of the wine and the mineral character of the soil. The tannins are balanced and silky, with rich red fruit flavors (blackcurrants, blackberries, cherries...), and are aged in high-quality French oak barrels for 16-18 months, exuding toasty aromas. Only the best wines tasted from the batches are selected for the final blend of Chateau Caboni’s red wines.

Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc

Planting white grapes in vineyards containing gravelly clay limestone is an excellent terroir for white grapes. When young, Carbonnieux Blanc tastes refreshing and pure, with fruity and floral aromas. When ripe, they develop flavors of dried fruits and candied fruits, making room for a variety of gourmet pairings. The batches that form part of this "cru classé" will be blended to promote good collusion between the grape varieties. A blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon adds structure, giving it roundness and volume.

Second Label

La Croix de Carbonnieux's second series at the winery. The name pays homage to the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Holy Cross in Bordeaux, who owned the estate between the 13th and 18th centuries. The owner points to monks and great winemakers who brought Carbonnière international fame and promoted modernity. Their emblem, the "S" surrounding the Holy Cross, adorns the landscape throughout the castle and is emblazoned with the "S" on the bottle.
