History background

Chateau Prieure-Lichine is located in the Margaux region of Bordeaux-Médoc. The winery was rated as Fourth Growth in the 1855 Classification. The history of Chateau Prieure-Lichine can be traced back to the Roman period. Its predecessor was a church monastery. It was founded around 1,000 AD by the monks of Abbaye de Vertheuil, and the wine produced was supplied to Saint-Didier de Cantenac Residents of the parish, for meals and religious ceremonies. The location of Chateau Prieure-Lichine is the main resting place for pilgrims going to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, when they pass through the Médoc. During this period, the abbey became famous for its high quality wines.

From the 12th to the 17th centuries, the vineyards of the abbey were planted with a variety of crops, which did not change until the 18th century. At that time, the wine in the Médoc region aroused great interest, especially the attention of the British, and the land of the abbey was changed from mixed planting to single planting of vines. During this period, the wine quality of Chateau Prieure-Lichine continued to improve, and was listed as Margaux and Cantenac in the 1745 Bordeaux's Royal Administration Classification, a very famous ranking at that time. third-growth winery. During the First French Empire, the winery broke away from the jurisdiction of the church and the ownership was transferred to a Bordeaux wine merchant named Durand Delains.

Under the careful management of Durand Delains, the wine quality of Chateau Prieure-Lichine (Lixian Winery) has been continuously improved, and the price has also been rising. In the Médoc 1855 classification, Chateau Prieure-Lichine was officially rated as a fourth growth. Since then, the winery has experienced a period of frequent owner changes. Coupled with some vineyard diseases and pests such as powdery mildew and phylloxera at that time, as well as the impact of economic depression and war, the development of the winery once stagnated. Until 1951, when Alexis Lichine acquired the winery, only 4 hectares of vineyards were still in production. Two years after the acquisition of the winery, Alexis Lichine changed the name of the winery from "Chateau Prieure-Cantenac" to "Chateau Prieure-Lichine (Lixian Winery)", adding his own name. After Alexis Lichine took over the winery, he immediately started to rebuild the winery, constantly expanding the area of the vineyard, updating the equipment of the winery, and promoting the revival of the winery by opening the winery to the public.

Alexis Lichine, known as the "Pope of wine", is an outstanding winemaker and connoisseur. He has written several wine bestsellers and tirelessly promoted Bordeaux wines. After the death of Alexis Lichine in 1989, Chateau Prieure-Lichine was inherited by his son Sacha Lichine. Sacha Lichine continued to expand the area of the vineyard following his father's behest. However, in 1999, Chateau Prieure-Lichine was acquired by the Ballande Group, which has been in operation since then. It is worth mentioning that Ballande Group hired the famous winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt as the winemaking consultant of Chateau Prieure-Lichine (Lixian Winery). He is one of the most influential winemaking consultants in the world. All have received full marks from Robert Parker, which shows his superb winemaking skills.
