Chambolle-Musigny is located on the Cote de Nuits in Burgundy. Together with Gevery-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanee, it is also known as Burgundy's three most famous production areas. Originally a village of Chambolle. Beginning in the 18th century, Burgundy launched a village naming movement, adding the name of the most famous field in the wine village to the village name to emphasize the quality of the wine. Chambolle is no exception. In 1882, Chambolle added the name of the most famous local vineyard, Musigny Grand Cru, to the name of the village and changed its name to "Chabolle-Musigny".
Musigny Grand Cru
Musigny can be subdivided into two parts, Les Musigny and Les Petits Musigny, with slightly different soils and slopes. Les Musigny is characterized by high altitude and steep slopes. Chardonnay is planted in Les Petits Musigny at a lower altitude. It is also the area where the entire Cote de Nuits can produce white wine. Only the famous domaine Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue produces it.
Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru
Known for its grand and solid style, it is completely different from other vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny. Sometimes it is even wild and can undergo 30 to 50 years of cellaring. It often has aromas of violets, forest moss, shrubs, etc. It goes very well with poultry dishes such as partridge and duck.
1er Cru Les Amoureuses
Les Amoureuses covers an area of 5.4 hectares and is located on the downhill slope of the Musigny Grand Cru mentioned above. The terroir is quite close to it, and it is also known as the first-class garden closest to the grand cru. It can produce a very elegant and delicate Pinot Noir with very fine tannins.
George Roumier: From the famous Roumier family. As the wine grade increases, the proportion of grapes destemmed decreases. The style is generally elegant and restrained, and its specialty is that its Musigny Grand Cru wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels and 100% whole bunch grapes are fermented.
Robert Groffier: Robert Groffier is the largest landowner in Les Amoureuses. The Chambolle Musigny wine it produces is extremely famous. However, the winery is located in Morey-Saint-Denis. Robert Groffier passed away in 2020, and Nicolas Groffier, the fourth generation of the family, took over the business.
Jacques-Frederic Mugnier: Frederic Mugnier was originally a petroleum engineer. When his father passed away in 1980, he took over the family business. The overall style is extremely elegant. It will show many fruity and floral characteristics when drunk young, and the strength of the structure will begin to show as it ages. The best products of the winery include Chambolle-Musigny's famous first-class vineyard Les Amoureuse, which is both elegant and complex, and Musigny, which is known for its depth and excellent aging potential.
