The winery was founded in 1772 by the merchant Philippe Clicquot, and in 1805, when the founder's son François Clicquot died, his widow was only 27 years old. It took her only a few weeks to make a decision-to take over the winery herself. At a time when women are excluded from the business world, she dared to take the lead of the company and took on the role with passion and determination. The character of Mrs. Veuve Clicquot can be summed up in two words: bold and intelligent. Madame Veuve Clicquot made many important decisions, which promoted the development of Veuve Clicquot and also led the global champagne culture, making Veuve Clicquot Champagne one of the most famous brands in the world. the great lady
Lady Veuve Clicquot seized every new opportunity that presented herself and was willing to take risks, so she was able to expand her business to the four corners of the world. She is uncompromising when it comes to the quality of her wines, perfecting new production techniques. She invented the "table de remuage" (spinning table) to clarify champagne and created the first blended rosé champagne. In 1810, Madame Veuve Clicquot made the region's first recorded vintage Champagne, a testament to her ability to innovate. Within a few short years of taking over the estate, her name became a preeminent brand that is now known all over the world.
The modern Veuve Clicquot Maison has one of the best Champagne vineyards, both in terms of its size and the quality of the vines. Its 390 hectares are divided between 12 of the 17 Grand Crus and 20 of the 44 First Growths that make up the entire Champagne region. 95% of Veuve Clicquot's vines are classified as Grands Crus or Premiers Crus, with the latter accounting for only a quarter of the total vine area in Champagne. The grape variety for each plot is determined by evaluating its soil, climate and exposure. The Veuve Clicquot vineyard is composed of 47% Chardonnay grapes, 36% Pinot Noir and 17% Pinot Meunier. Clicquot vines are mostly located on gentle slopes, allowing the vines to benefit from shallow soil and maximum exposure to sunlight. Since its inception, the Veuve Clicquot brand has also established strong partnerships with winegrowers in the Champagne region. These grape suppliers help ensure the consistent quality of Veuve Clicquot wines.
